In this section I will analyze primary sources that I am fairly confident were written in the first century C.E., providing our earliest window into the development of Christianity. These are the Gospel According to Mark, the Gospel According to Matthew, and the Antiquities of the Jews by Josephus.
I will discuss each of these writings in turn, their content, their date and location of origin, what they can tell us about the historical Jesus, and what they can tell us about first century Christianity. Sub-sections of this section are listed below.
2a. The writings of the gospels of Mark and Matthew. On this page I identify the genre of these two writings as Greco-Roman bioi and delve into their historical context in the late decades of the first century.
2b. The gospel of Mark. On this page I will analyze Mark’s gospel as a bios, describe its structure, and identify its major themes. I will also generate some initial hypotheses about the date and location of the gospel’s composition, the historical Jesus, and the development of early Christianity.
2c. The gospel of Matthew.
